Artist Statement

In his practice, Patrick Mitchell repeatedly draws and paints subjects that he knows well and sees daily - himself, his dogs, the hills near where he lives - acknowledging that both he and subject are constantly changing; the subject physically and he in his approach and perception of reality.

He is interested in learning how to ‘navigate’ the structure of a form in a way that speaks of the vitality of momentary experience.

Although small, each of his drawings and paintings is the end result of an incredibly intense experience, and comes after many, many preceding attempts. He finds it difficult to get something that feels worth keeping, like a revelation, like a moment.

For the past two years, he has been preoccupied with drawing and painting Adders that he finds in the hills near where he lives.
